Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. Elihu Anthony White (1824-1900) was a Quaker farmer and business leader from Belvidere, N.C. After serving as postmaster of Newby's Bridge (1858-1861), White was elected as a Republican to the North Carolina Senate (1868-1870). He was justice of the peace in 1873 and served on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners (1873-1878). In 1879, White was appointed collector of Internal Revenue by President Rutherford B.
